Akashiwo sanguinae

Description:  Unarmoured.  Apical groove forms a large, clockwise spiral.  Lacks a collecting chamber into which the pusular vesicles open.  Major caratenoid is peridinin.  Lacks vesicular differentiations in the nuclear envelope.  

Type Locality:  Kozusa-ura, Gokasho Bay, Japan

Basionym:  Gymnodinium sanguineum
